Tips

Planning a children's church outline for your service is fairly simple if you can keep several key tips in mind. Still, volunteers are usually left in the dark when they step up and decide to take on their church's children's department. They are given an empty room, a few chairs, and a Bible with the expectation that they not only teach these kids about God, faith, discipline, and character, but also do that in a manner that is entertaining and fun. Yes, it's a crazy expectation, but you can do it. Just start with the basics.

First, understand that you will need to plan out every single minute of your children's church or Sunday school service, from beginning to end. Get that concept right now. An unprepared children's church or children's Sunday school teacher is a setup for disaster. If children feel that you are unprepared, they will take advantage of that weakness by testing your patience with requests and irrelevant questions. Also, a bored child is a discipline problem waiting to happen. Over planning is the best route.

On that note, have additional "busy" activities on hand at all times should the adult service go over the expected time, or if a project you had planned has to be canceled. Rain, lost supplies, and little inconveniences do occur in children's church all the time, so have coloring sheets and activities on hand for emergencies. You will need them more often than you think.

Next, be sure to set up reward and punishment systems before your next children's church service. Why? Because when you have a child threatening to use the safety scissors to give the kid next to him a new nose, you'll need to know what to do without thinking. Have an isolated chair set up for problem children to sit in for timeouts, and have a teen or some sort of assistant on hand to visit the adult service to find parents if necessary. With that being said, reward systems are often the best way to keep order in the classroom to begin with. Offer something small, like a piece of candy or extra time on the playground, for students who behave properly. Threatening to take these regular awards away for bad behavior are often enough to keep kids in line.
